Designing my future dream house

14. October 2018

An exciting second week at Vectorworks – of Sales territories, getting familiar with Vectorworks software, sea-food (both alive and prepared as a dish), Jackson Pollock and impudent waiters.

How to use Vectorworks software

My second week at Vectorworks started with the weekly sales meeting. In this meeting, we discussed the sales performance and to ensure that our target sales are still on plan. During the afternoon, I started to analyze and visualize a list of prospects for our Architecture and Entertainment sales teams. To group the prospects by equally strong territories, I had to first develop KPI’s that display the value of each state. To do so, I collected and researched data about current performance and recurring revenue as well as the potential for sales within the Entertainment and Architecture industry for every state in the US.

I spent all week editing and analyzing data and becoming more familiar with the Vectorworks software by watching free form modeling videos and attempting to design my future dream house within Vectorworks.

On Tuesday, AJ, a Sales Support Representative, asked if I would like to join him and meet some friends for bowling after work. We had a great time and ended with a late-night dinner at an all-American diner.

Hungry Hungry Vectorcrew

Our 2019 launch party of the new Vectorworks software was scheduled for Friday and everyone was looking forward to it. The launch party started at 4PM in the parking lot and most employees wore their favorite Vectorworks shirt. Games such as “Giant Party Pong”, “Hungry Hungry Vectorcrew”, and music by DJ Jacob made sure that no one was bored. We had food trucks and a catering team that offered sandwiches, fried tomatoes, watermelon, boardwalk style fries, grilled corn on the cob plus kebobs and steamed Maryland crabs.

Maryland blue crabs

Everyone told me that eating Maryland blue crabs is a tradition, so even though I usually do not eat seafood, I had to try them. After a few rounds of “Giant Party Pong”, Josh and Linda (the Sales Operations Project Coordinator and the only other German working at Vectorworks) grabbed me and introduced me to a couple of crabs laying on the table spiced and salted ready to be eaten. Josh taught me how to properly open and peel a crab to get to the meat. It takes a lot of effort in terms of peeling the crab to get to a little bit of crab meat, but it was well worth it, delicious and a fun experience.

Sports bar or basement?

There are a lot of challenging bike trails in my neighborhood, so I grabbed my bike and explored the area on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, Josh picked me up and invited me to watch the Alabama football game with his brothers. We bought buffalo wings, pulled pork, tortillas chips and dip and watched the game in his brother’s basement which he had converted into a sports bar furnished with 2 big TV- screens (so we could watch golf and football simultaneously) and a large family size sofa.

On to the Gallery

On Sunday, Dave (the Director of Product Technology) invited me to join him on his trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. We took the metro in the morning and spent a couple of hours between Jackson Pollock, Marine paintings from the Dutch golden age, and other interesting paintings and artists.

The third Monday, I started visualizing all edited data on an US map and decided with Josh how to set up the different territories. We started to develop a west-, mid-, north- and east area for our sales representatives.

Seafood – still alive

After work, Linda and I went to Baltimore and visited the National Aquarium. We were welcomed by sharks, dolphins, alligators, turtles, frogs and more. One of the highlights was feeding the big scaled archerfish, which spits water on its target so that it falls into the water.

Hospitably, obliging and polite – not at Dick’s Last Resort

Afterwards, we had dinner at “Dick’s Last Resort”. This restaurant chain is well-known for their intentionally obnoxious staff and their wacky décor. The waitress was being rude on purpose, trying at all times to create an uncomfortable situation by making snarky comments. For example, we were missing napkins and when we asked for them they were just thrown at us. They tied bibs around our necks and made us wear paper hats with funny sayings on them. In the end, it’s all in good fun and even the waitress couldn’t help but laugh herself.
